Savannah James First-Class Flight Sparks Debate

Savannah James doesn’t often make headlines for her personal opinions, but her recent comments about friendship, money, and first-class travel have sparked a genuine divide online. The wife of NBA superstar LeBron James opened up on Boardroom’s Mental Wealth podcast about how she handles finances with her closest friends, and the internet has thoughts.

During an episode with her best friend April McDaniel, Savannah James explained that she doesn’t feel obligated to pay for friends’ first-class tickets when traveling together. The two discussed their 15-year friendship and how their approach to money has evolved as they’ve become business partners. What seemed like a straightforward conversation about boundaries has turned into a wider debate about what friends actually owe each other.

“I’ve never had an instance…If I’m like ‘we’re going somewhere,’ they already understand what it is. There’s no expectation of [me] taking care of something or just having me be responsible for them,” James said on the podcast.

McDaniel backed her up, noting they’re both realistic about their different lifestyles and financial situations. She flies business class when it fits her budget, while James opts for first. That doesn’t mean McDaniel never enjoys the perks of first class, though—she occasionally joins James up front to take advantage of the amenities.

When clips from the episode circulated on social media, reactions split almost immediately. Some people felt James missed an opportunity to show up for her friend. They argued that with LeBron’s wealth, covering a first-class ticket would be negligible for her household.

“This ain’t it. If that’s my real friend, either we both in the back or we both in the front, but ain’t no ‘I’ll catch you when we land,'” one person wrote on X/Twitter. Another chimed in: “I feel like Savannah might not have access to the funds like we think she does because your whole ass husband is LeBron James. What you mean you’re not even offering to pay for your lifelong bestie to fly first class with you?”

The criticism went deeper for some. “If I’m balling & I call you my SISTER, BITCH, Good Friend, etc…We’re both flying private, OR we’re both flying Economy. Women that do silent superiority flexes are WEIRD & CORNY!” another user expressed.

But the other side of the conversation offered a different perspective. Bestselling author Luvvie Ajayi jumped into the discussion on Threads, noting that McDaniel isn’t struggling—she flies business class regularly. “Savannah flying first does not entitle her friends to be in first with her,” Ajayi wrote. “So every time you have a girls’ trip, you gotta put up money to make sure everyone is in the same cabin? There’s a difference between being a giver and playing Captain Save Everyone.”

Some pointed out that James has already given McDaniel something more valuable than a plane ticket: access. “She’s given her a platform and put her in rooms and in front of people that can help her create her own generational wealth. That’s worth far more than a first-class ticket,” one person argued. The framing shifted the entire conversation from what James wasn’t doing to what she already has done.

James’ comments touch on something real in friendships, especially among people with significant wealth gaps. It’s the tension between generosity and setting boundaries, between loyalty and independence. She and McDaniel seem to have found their balance—one that works for them, even if Twitter has opinions about it.
