After the 39-year-old actor was ordered into substance abuse treatment following his recent New Orleans arrest, insiders say the mandate might not actually lead to real change. Shia LaBeouf was charged with misdemeanor battery after an altercation during Mardi Gras celebrations and agreed to enroll in rehab, undergo drug testing, and post bond.
Speaking to Page Six, people close to him describe him as “a master manipulator” who’s “very adept at playing the role of a good guy in recovery trying to be a better self.” One source alleged that he’s “so good at convincing people and potential partners” that they actually believe he’s changed.
LaBeouf has been open about his struggles before. In a recent interview, he admitted, “It’s not nice to hurt people ever. It’s lame. People got hurt. I got to deal with that. It was on me.” He added, “Definitely. Yeah. One thousand percent,” when asked if he takes responsibility.
The actor has sought treatment in the past and has publicly discussed sobriety. His current case is ongoing, with a court date set later this month.
