So, on a recent Friday (December 5), she continued a long-standing tradition for First Ladies by visiting the hospital, bringing good cheer and wishing the little ones strength and a mountain of toys from Santa. This tradition goes way back, started by none other than Bess Truman in the mid-20th century. But let’s be real, it’s Melania Trump‘s history with the holiday that really got tongues wagging this time.
Walking into Washington, D.C.’s Children’s National Hospital, Melania was greeted by a sweet 5-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. They led her to a super festive atrium, complete with a grand Christmas tree and a cozy red chair where she sat down to connect with the kids.
With about two dozen young patients and other guests watching, she read aloud “How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?” by Mac Barnett. After the story, she made sure to wish the children lots of strength and, of course, a ton of toys. She even shared a heartwarming message:
“I’m sure Santa will visit all of you this Christmas and bring you a lot of toys, so I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I wish you a lot of strength and love.”
Not forgetting her husband, she added that President Donald Trump was also sending his love and best wishes. Before heading out, Melania made sure to personally visit patients in the hospital’s hematology and oncology wing, bringing gifts and even joining Santa Claus himself to spread some extra joy.
Now, beyond the buzz of her simply making a public appearance, social media went *all the way in* on her reading skills. Folks online couldn’t help but comment on her Slavonic accent and English proficiency, especially with all the immigration discussions swirling around. They were definitely making those jokes about the Slovenia native’s pronunciation while she read to the kids.
But the real tea was spilled when users pointed out the *extreme* irony of her being all festive for Christmas. You know, after that infamous audio leak from October 2020 (a conversation from Summer 2018) where she went off, literally asking, “Who gives a f**k about Christmas?” Oh, the memes practically wrote themselves!
For those who need a refresher, this unfiltered moment came to light thanks to Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, her former friend and Senior Adviser, who secretly recorded the convo. Wolkoff later dished all the details in her tell-all book, ‘Melania and Me‘. In that recorded call, Melania was clearly frustrated. She was catching heat for her husband’s controversial policy of separating families at the southern border, all while trying to juggle those traditional First Lady duties, like, you guessed it, decorating for Christmas.
“They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him, I support him. I don’t say enough I don’t do enough where I am. I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f**k about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right? OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f**king break. Where they were saying anything when [Barack] Obama did that? I cannot go, I was trying get the kid reunited with the mom. I didn’t have a chance – needs to go through the process and through the law.”
