Stephen A. Smith Analyzes Jasmine Crockett’s Texas Senate Primary Loss, Says She ‘Ran Into Similar Issues’ That Blocked Kamala Harris’ Presidential Run

Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith took to his SiriusXM show to break down Texas Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett‘s Senate primary loss — saying she ran into the same kind of headwinds that tripped up former Vice President Kamala Harris against President Donald Trump.

From the jump, Jasmine Crockett had the buzz: name recognition, confidence, a solid resume, and that quick wit that made her a standout in Congress. But Stephen A. Smith pointed out that leaning too hard into anti‑Trump outrage may have cost her, just like it did for Harris.

As we reported, on March 3 Texas Democratic Congressman James Talarico secured the nomination in Texas’ Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. The race was super close, but CNN said Talarico ultimately pulled off the win. He now heads to a May 26 Republican runoff against either U.S. Senator John Cornyn or Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Before Crockett’s loss to Talarico, she hinted that cheating might be afoot in her election. She later called out the Texas Supreme Court after it temporarily blocked a judge’s order to extend polling hours.

Despite starting the race with major advantages, Stephen A. Smith — who’s spoken about her many times — now says she, like Kamala Harris, fell victim to over‑focusing on Donald Trump. On the March 6 episode of his Straight Shooter show, Smith said:

“While he positioned himself as a teacher in the Senate — injecting progressive Christianity and focusing on education, compromise, and building coalitions — she positioned herself as a street fighter who thrives on confrontation. Viral clashes with Trump and other Republicans, etc. She emphasized her national name recognition from Congressional fights and argued criticism of her was rooted in racism and sexism. No doubt it worked with a lot of Black voters. No doubt it worked with some women. But, in the end was it enough to beat the fellow Democrat who was a novice compared to her? For United States Senate seat representing 31 million people out of the great state of Texas? No, it was not. That is a fact. As I’ve said on many occasions, you don’t have to be extra when Trump gives you all the ammunition in the world. Just sit around, and you know, treat him like the Dallas Cowboys. Be patient, just wait for it. They won’t let you down. Somehow, some way, Trump won’t let you down. I was saying this. I was saying this countless times. And in the end, what it comes down to is this: One could easily make an argument that Jasmine Crockett, and frankly Kamala Harris, ran into similar issues. Both leaning a lot—perhaps too heavily—into emotional arguments and outrage over Donald Trump.”
