Think Barack Obama's effortless cool, Wes Moore's leading-man looks, or Edward Brooke's old-school elegance. But these men aren't just here to give us something nice to look at. Their careers tell a larger story about Black political representation in America. From the Reconstruction era to today's political landscape, Black men have made history in offices that were once closed to them.

Tupac Shakur shooting mastermind Duane "Keefe D" Davis started his 40-year prison sentence in Nevada and we can see it written all over his face. Davis posed for a new mug shot at the maximum-security High Desert State in Indian Springs, NV and it's safe to say he's not a happy camper.

After emancipation, formerly enslaved Black Americans built communities of their own, acquired land, raised families and created places where they could live with greater independence from racism. Known as freedom colonies, these historically significant settlements were established during Reconstruction and to escape Jim Crow. Residents created support systems that allowed families to live more independently, establishing churches, schools and homes. Today, descendants are working to preserve these communities by maintaining family land, organizing reunions and passing histories to younger generations, ensuring these important places and stories are not forgotten.
