Three juveniles are reportedly facing charges after being accused of fatally shooting a MARTA bus driver, Leroy Ramos, over a $2.50 bus fare.

Here’s What Reportedly Happened In The Fatal Shooting Of Leroy Ramos, The MARTA Bus Driver

According to USA Today, the fatal shooting of Ramos occurred on Friday, January 3, Around 6:30 p.m. Per a recent press release shared by MARTA, “three juveniles got into an altercation with Ramos in the bus loop at Decatur Station and Ramos was shot and killed.”

Furthermore, the outlet notes that the juveniles got into an argument with Ramos “over refusing to pay the $2.50 fare.” Surveillance footage captured of the incident reportedly shows the dispute, and “gunshots could be heard in the background.” Per Fox 5 Atlanta, Ramos was struck three times and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a hospital.

USA Today notes that Ramos was 47 years old and had begun working for MARTA in October 2024. He is reportedly survived by his wife and three children.

Lastly, a GoFundMe launched in his honor has raised over $11,000 of its $55,500 goal.

“This tragic incident happened over a fare dispute that resulted in us losing a life that was worth so much more than $2.50! Our family is enduring this senseless act of violence firsthand and mourns the loss of a soul that was precious and so priceless to us, 3 days into the new year,” the campaign’s description reads in part.

More Details On The Charges Against The Three Juveniles

According to USA Today, two of the three juveniles were arrested on the night of the fatal shooting. Per MARTA’s press release, the third juvenile turned themselves into the police on Monday, January 6.

“Two suspects were arrested immediately and charged with murder. The third, and suspected shooter, turned himself in to DeKalb County Police tonight and has been charged with murder,” the release reads.

Furthermore, the identities and ages of the juveniles have not been publicly released due to their minor status. However, they have reportedly been charged as adults.

“MARTA is devastated by the murder of bus operator Leroy Ramos, a new employee and ATU member who had already made an impact on his fellow operators,” a MARTA spokesperson reportedly asserted, per USA Today. “MARTA has a strict de-escalation policy designed to protect operators from violence that includes not engaging with customers beyond the scope of their position as bus operator and leaving enforcement of rules to MARTA Police.”

A Mother In California Also Passed Away After A Shocking Shooting

Leroy Ramos’ passing is unfortunately not the only tragedy to strike amid the recent holiday season. As BlkCosmo previously reported, Jessinya Mina, a 22-year-old California mother, passed away in December. At the time, reports asserted that she had been accidentally shot by her two-year-old son.

Subsequently, police arrested the mother’s 18-year-old boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez.
