In a truly shocking turn of events, Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, widely recognized on TikTok as “Tea Tyme,” has been arrested and charged with reckless homicide. The serious allegations stem from a tragic incident where she allegedly hit and killed a man while reportedly livestreaming her drive on TikTok.
According to reports from the Zion Police Department, 43-year-old McCarty-Wroten was taken into custody on Tuesday, December 23rd. Authorities say she was involved in a traffic accident on November 3rd that claimed the life of 59-year-old Darren Lucas.
Lucas, a hard-working individual, was simply walking home from his grocery store shift in Zion, Illinois. This city, nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan with about 25,000 residents, saw a life tragically cut short as Lucas was struck while on his way to catch the bus.
TikTok Star ‘Tea Tyme’ Faces Reckless Homicide Charges After Fatal Crash
When investigators questioned McCarty-Wroten, she claimed she had a green light. However, surveillance footage from nearby businesses painted a different picture, showing the light was red when her vehicle entered the intersection.
McCarty-Wroten did remain at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement initially. Yet, she reportedly declined to let investigators search her cellphone. Adding another layer of concern to this tragedy, an 8-year-old child was also in the vehicle with the TikToker at the time of the incident. Thankfully, both were checked and refused medical assistance.
What truly escalated this case was public involvement. In the days following the crash, numerous community members reached out to Zion Investigators. They shared information about a TikTok video that allegedly captured Ms. McCarty-Wroten livestreaming herself while driving during the precise moment of the crash.
That video proved crucial. It confirmed that the TikToker was indeed livestreaming with an 8-year-old child in the car. The Lake County State Attorney’s Office subsequently issued a warrant, leading to McCarty-Wroten’s arrest on December 23rd. She now faces charges of reckless homicide and aggravated use of an electronic communication device, and is currently being held without bond.
Later, the TikToker, through her attorney, surrendered her phone. Forensic analysis then confirmed the video was recorded exactly at the date and time of the crash. The viral video from the user, identified by the handle “Tea_Tyme_3,” captures a chilling moment where she can be heard repeatedly exclaiming, “Fk, fk, f**k, I just hit somebody.”
