The United States women’s national ice hockey team has reportedly declined an invitation to attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

According to People, the women’s team secured gold on Thursday, February 19, after defeating Team Canada 2-1. The win marked their first Olympic gold medal since 2018. It was a major moment for the program and for women’s hockey in the United States.

On Sunday, the U.S. men’s hockey team also captured gold. During a congratulatory phone call, President Trump invited the men’s team to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union address. During that call, he made it clear the women’s team would be included.

“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” Trump said while laughing. “You do know that. I do believe I’d probably would be impeached [if the women’s team wasn’t invited].” The comment quickly circulated online. The clip was uploaded to social media and sparked debate across platforms.

Why the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team Declined the Invitation

Shortly after the invitation became public, a spokesperson for USA Hockey confirmed the team would not attend.

In a statement, the organization explained the decision was based on scheduling conflicts.

“Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate,” a USA Hockey spokesperson said.

The team also noted that they were honored to be recognized.

Social Media Reaction and Political Undertones

Once the video of President Trump’s comments circulated, reactions were swift.

Some users interpreted the laughter as lighthearted. Others questioned whether the invitation placed the athletes in a politically charged situation.
