USPS Driver Charged After Allegedly Trying to Run Over 10-Year-Old Boy on Scooter in Florida

Talk about a situation that just went completely left! A U.S. Postal Service driver is now facing some serious felony charges. Why? Because he allegedly attempted to run over a 10-year-old boy who was just riding his scooter, trying to return a package delivered to the wrong home. Seriously, who does that?

This wild incident went down on December 27 in Escambia County. The child was reportedly trying to do a good deed, helping a neighbor out. But instead of a thank you, the driver, William White Jr., 41, apparently assumed the package was stolen. That assumption quickly spiraled into a dangerous and aggressive confrontation. It’s a shocking story, especially given that William White Jr.‘s actions led to a child being injured and a scooter destroyed. This isn’t the heartwarming kind of USPS story we sometimes hear, like a worker rescuing a child from a dangerous situation; this is truly disturbing.

Authorities Say Driver Intentionally Targeted the Child

According to WEAR, Florida Highway Patrol officials investigated and concluded that this incident was no accident. FHP Captain Jason King clearly stated that White deliberately drove the USPS vehicle straight at the child, ultimately running over the boy’s scooter.

Thankfully, the child was quick enough to jump into a nearby yard, avoiding being struck by the vehicle directly. Still, he reportedly injured his ankle in the process. Investigators say White wasn’t done, allegedly yelling at the child before noticing the boy’s parents outside. Once he saw them, preparing to confront him, he reportedly drove away from the scene.

Captain King later criticized the driver’s extreme response, saying, “It’s amazing what a small conversation would do in a situation rather than jumping straight to force, use of force…or really escalating the situation way past where it should have been.” Preach, Captain King!

USPS Driver Arrested and Facing Multiple Charges

As expected, White was later arrested and is now facing some serious charges:

  • Criminal mischief
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
  • Petit theft

The irony of a postal driver being charged with “petit theft” after allegedly accusing a child of stealing a package is definitely not lost on us.

U.S. Postal Service Responds

The United States Postal Service quickly released a statement addressing this upsetting incident. They confirmed that White has been employed with the agency since 2025. Yes, you read that right – 2025. While this appears to be a typo in the original report, we’re keeping it as the factual detail provided.

Their statement read, “The Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is actively investigating this issue in partnership with local law enforcement.” They also added, “The U.S. Postal Service takes the safety of customers and employees very seriously.” We certainly hope so, especially when it comes to protecting our community’s children from such aggressive behavior.
