In a culture that often claims to protect Black women while actively doing the opposite, Chicago rapper Vic Mensa is raising his voice. The multi-talented artist recently took to social media to confront the persistent cyberbullying and deep-seated misogynoir faced by Houston’s hottest superstar, Megan Thee Stallion.
The Litmus Test for Black Women’s Safety
In a blunt, eye-opening Instagram video, Mensa dissected the community’s reaction to the 2020 shooting incident involving Tory Lanez. Despite Lanez being convicted of three felonies, the public narrative frequently shifted to victim-blaming. Mensa accurately identified Megan Thee Stallion as a modern-day barometer for how society views and treats Black women, criticizing the logic of those accusing her of trying to “ruin lives” simply by seeking justice after being shot.
Mensa didn’t hold back on hip-hop’s stark double standards. He pointed out how male rappers are celebrated and elevated for promoting gun violence and hyper-sexuality, while Black women are heavily scrutinized, shamed, and endangered for navigating their own lives and sexualities. This culture of hypocrisy, he noted, has historically targeted Black female legends, drawing direct parallels to the treatment of Janet Jackson after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl incident, and praising the resilience of current artists like Yung Miami.
Standing Tall Against Cyber Harassment
Mensa expanded his critique on Substack, emphasizing how people continually search for reasons to justify the violence inflicted on Black women. Meanwhile, Megan continues to triumph in and out of the courtroom. She recently secured a massive legal victory against online personality Milagro Gramz, who was found to have collaborated with Lanez’s camp to spread malicious misinformation and deepfake material targeting the rapper.
