Angie Nixon’s Shocking Florida Primary Upset Victory

Jacksonville state Rep. Angie Nixon entered Florida’s Democratic Senate primary Tuesday as the clear underdog against Alex Vindman, a nationally known former Army officer with a massive fundraising advantage. Then the ballots were tallied, and Nixon delivered a stunning upset.

The 42-year-old defeated Vindman with 56% of the vote, putting a Angie Nixon democratic socialist on the November ballot in a state where Republicans have dominated statewide elections for years, especially during the Trump era. The odds were stacked against her from the start.

She Won While Being Dramatically Outspent

Vindman, the former director of European Affairs for the National Security Council, raised more than $16 million for the race. Nixon raised just under $1 million. That’s not a small gap—it’s the kind of funding disparity that typically defines campaigns before voters ever cast a ballot.

So how did she pull it off? The answer traces back to Nixon’s deep roots in Florida politics, cultivated long before she decided to run for Senate.

From Jacksonville Community Organizer to State Politics

Nixon was born and raised in Jacksonville, starting her political career as a community organizer. She worked as a district aide to then-state Rep. Mia Jones before moving into labor organizing and voter engagement. She eventually became executive director of Florida for All, a progressive organization focused on turning out voters.

In 2020, Nixon ran for the Florida House and won a Democratic primary against incumbent Kimberly Daniels. She went on to represent a Jacksonville district in Tallahassee, where she quickly earned a reputation as one of the Legislature’s more outspoken progressives.

That background gave Nixon something money couldn’t buy: legitimate local ties. While Vindman brought national credentials and big-dollar backing, Nixon had years of relationships with Florida communities and progressive activists. She showed up at local Democratic meetings, talked directly with voters, and made her underdog status part of her political brand.

Her politics also gave voters a clear choice.

Running Unapologetically Progressive

Nixon campaigned as a democratic socialist, backing Medicare for All, a $25 minimum wage and expanded access to child care. She centered the race on the everyday pressures facing working Floridians—housing, wages, health care and cost of living—issues that mirror the top concerns voters are expressing across the country ahead of the midterms.

Beyond rhetoric, Nixon has put her activism into action. She was arrested this year during a protest against Republican redistricting efforts and is facing misdemeanor charges related to the demonstration. That willingness to risk arrest for her beliefs resonated with voters tired of cautious politics.

Local organizing, an unapologetically progressive message, and a willingness to fight proved to be a winning combination. Now Nixon faces an entirely different challenge: running against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November on a statewide stage where Democrats have struggled for years.
