Former President Jimmy Carter was laid to rest on Thursday (Jan. 9) in Washington, D.C. Many notable politicians were in attendance at the funeral, including former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump. Michelle Obama wasn’t by her husband’s side, but he seemed to be okay with Trump’s presence, though.
Michelle aside, the Associated Press reports that all of the living former presidents and their spouses were at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Barack and Donald sat in the front pews of Washington National Cathedral behind only President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses.
Live coverage of the service has been all over social media. But users have been particularly cuttin’ UP at videos and photos of Barack and Donald chattin’, smiling, and even laughing at the service!
Despite the viral photos and videos, AP said that former Democratic President Bill Clinton and his Republican successor, George W. Bush, also spoke cordially to Trump. Additionally, the President-elect also shook hands with his former vice president, Mike Pence. You might recall that Pence was a loyal ally until he refused to go along with Trump’s efforts to remain president after losing the 2020 election to Biden.
While Barack Obama, Bill, and George seemed to have cordial energy for Donald, Governor Gavin Newsom recently returned a lil’ shade Trump’s way. The day before Carter’s funeral, the President-elect took to Truth Social to blame Newsom for the wildfires raging in California right now. In return, Gavin and his communications director accused Trump of playing politics during a deadly crisis.
Associated Press reporter Jonathan J. Cooper contributed to this report.
