Chris Brown is facing some serious legal heat. The R&B star just asked a California judge to let him skip a court examination tied to a $12.9 million judgment. His argument? The Chris Brown tour with Usher and his Nevada residency make appearing in Los Angeles impractical.
The singer filed a motion on August 27 opposing former housekeeper Maria Avila’s request for a judgment debtor examination. That’s when her attorneys would question him about his finances and assets. Breezy says he lives in Nevada, over 150 miles from the Van Nuys courthouse where this would go down, and his performance schedule is completely packed right now.
“Mr. Brown’s ongoing travel makes Plaintiffs’ request particularly problematic,” the filing states.
Right now, Brown is on a North American stadium tour with Usher that runs through December. He’s also hinting at “ongoing late-stage discussions about extending this tour internationally through the end of 2027.” That’s a whole lot of travel, which makes his case even more interesting.
The $12.9 million judgment came after Avila sued over a dog attack at Brown’s former Los Angeles-area home. A judge already allowed her to collect a portion of his touring proceeds toward that award. This whole situation shows how complex financial disputes can get when major artists are constantly moving around.
Brown denies he’s hiding or moving assets to dodge the judgment and is still challenging the verdict itself. He’s also requested a new trial, with a hearing on that motion scheduled for September. This case is definitely one to keep watching.
