Detroit Family Sues Hospital After Staff Allegedly Lost Portion of Woman’s Skull, Mixing It With Another Patient’s Bones

This is wild, y’all. A Detroit family is coming for Ascension St. John Hospital with a lawsuit that’ll make your jaw drop. They’re alleging that medical staff at the hospital didn’t just lose a portion of a woman’s skull after brain surgery, but then mistakenly mixed it up with another patient’s bones. Yeah, you read that right.

As reported by ClickOnDetroit, this whole ordeal kicked off after Edna Burton’s family was told her skull fragment was just gone months after a crucial surgery. What makes this even more heartbreaking? Burton herself had dedicated over 20 years working at this very same hospital. In June 2023, she underwent a hemicraniectomy to relieve pressure after suffering a stroke, a procedure that took place in the very operating room where she had spent decades helping others.

Hospital Allegedly Mixed Burton’s Skull With Another Patient’s Bones

The lawsuit from the family states that Edna Burton’s skull fragment was, in fact, mixed up with another patient’s bones – someone named Edna Brown. When it was time for doctors to perform the follow-up surgery to reattach Burton’s skull piece, the staff had to admit the unthinkable: it was nowhere to be found.

Instead of the real thing, the hospital apparently offered Burton’s family a prosthetic replacement. But after it was implanted, her health took a sharp turn for the worse. Her daughter shared the devastating impact: “She stopped talking, really, stopped eating, like bed-bound, she had bed sores,” she said. “Her physical therapist said I’m not going to continue to do physical therapy because we’re torturing her with how much pain she’s in.”

Family members watched as Edna Burton’s condition quickly deteriorated, leaving her to endure months of excruciating pain and confusion. They are convinced that the hospital’s colossal mistake and negligence directly led to her prolonged suffering.

Adding Insult to Injury: A $25 Gas Card Offer?

To add insult to literal injury, Ascension St. John Hospital allegedly had the audacity to offer the family a $25 gas card after this entire debacle. You can just imagine the anger.

Edna Burton’s daughter, Erica, rightly called the gesture insulting, stating it perfectly encapsulated the hospital’s appalling handling of the situation. “They could say that it all, what she’s going through stemmed from the stroke — how do we know?” Erica questioned. “You threw her bone away. You didn’t even give her the chance.”

The family firmly argues that their loved one was robbed of the proper recovery she deserved. They believe the hospital’s egregious mishandling of her medical care has undeniably left her in a debilitated state, a shadow of her former self.

While Ascension St. John Hospital hasn’t publicly commented on the lawsuit, this tragic case has reignited serious concerns about medical accountability and proper oversight within our hospital systems. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
