President Donald Trump spoke out after a tragic shooting rocked Providence, Rhode Island’s Brown University, leaving at least two people dead and nine critically injured. The suspect in this devastating incident remains at large, prompting a massive manhunt.
The developing story saw Providence Mayor Brett Smiley initially report two fatalities and eight critical injuries during a Saturday evening press conference. Meanwhile, Donald Trump was also briefed on the unfolding situation. Shortly after, updated reports from a Brown University Health spokesperson confirmed the injured count had unfortunately risen to nine, with all victims identified as Brown University students.
The campus was gripped by confusion as university officials first announced a suspect was in custody, only to quickly reverse that statement. Authorities later confirmed the shooter, described as a male dressed in all black, was still on the run. The weapon used has not been recovered, leaving the type of gun unknown.
Gunfire first erupted at 4:05 p.m. at the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building. The shooter reportedly fled towards the Hope Street side of the campus. Officials immediately issued a shelter-in-place order for everyone on campus and in surrounding areas, urging them to lock doors, silence phones, and prioritize safety.

“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
However, mirroring the university’s update, Trump also corrected his report. He then stated, “The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement — the suspect is NOT in custody.” Speaking with the press upon his arrival at the White House on Marine One, he reiterated his briefing on the shooting, adding:
“I’ve been fully briefed on the Brown University situation. What a terrible thing it is, and all we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt. It’s a shame. It’s a shame. Just pray. Thank you very much.”
