When a Game Turns Deadly: A Florida Tragedy

In a heartbreaking turn of events that shook a Florida community, a family’s holiday season was tragically cut short. What began as a mundane argument over an NFL game on December 22nd spiraled into unspeakable domestic violence. Authorities have identified the suspect in this devastating incident as Jason Kenney, 47, who allegedly took his wife’s life and shot his stepdaughter before ultimately ending his own.

His wife, Crystal Kenney, tragically lost her life, and a 13-year-old girl was also shot, though she is now thankfully recovering in the hospital. Investigators revealed that the fatal dispute ignited when Crystal simply asked Jason Kenney to turn off the San Francisco 49ers vs. Indianapolis Colts game. A seemingly harmless request, but one that, fueled by alcohol, quickly escalated beyond control. Authorities confirmed that Jason had been drinking, a detail that often lowers inhibitions and raises aggression, especially when tensions are already high. The situation escalated quickly; Crystal even told her 12-year-old son to call 911, but he never got the chance.

Children Witness Unimaginable Horror

As the argument intensified, the scene inside the home became a nightmare for the children present. The 12-year-old boy, hearing gunfire, bravely ran to a neighbor’s house, escaping unharmed. When deputies arrived, they were met with a devastating reality: Crystal Kenney lay dead.

Nearby, the 13-year-old girl had sustained gunshot wounds to her shoulder and face. It’s nothing short of a miracle that she survived and is now on the road to recovery. Doctors expect her to pull through physically, but the emotional scars from such trauma will undoubtedly linger for a lifetime. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, visibly shaken, recounted the girl’s chilling plea, “She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway.’” That raw quote hits different, a testament to the terror she endured.

Amidst the chaos, deputies also discovered Jason and Crystal’s 1-year-old daughter, miraculously unharmed and sleeping peacefully in her crib. This stark detail left investigators shaken, serving as a powerful reminder: violence doesn’t just impact its direct victims. It casts a long, dark shadow, reshaping childhoods and stealing futures.

A Desperate Call and a Final Act

Following the horrific shooting, Jason Kenney fled the scene. He placed a call to his sister in upstate New York, confessing he had “done something” wrong and ominously stating it would be their last conversation. Deputies swiftly tracked Jason to his father’s home, where he was found hiding in a shed on the property. As law enforcement moved in to demand his surrender, Jason ended his own life.

The immediate violence ceased, but the profound damage inflicted upon this family and community will echo for years to come.
