New York, NY – Former Miss USA winner Cheslie Kryst died Sunday morning after jumping from a high-rise building in Manhattan, according to a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department.

While an investigation is still ongoing, police told Today that Kryst’s death is “believed to be a suicide” and “indicative of a jump from an elevated position.”

In addition to being a Miss USA winner and ‘ExtraTV’ correspondent, Kryst was an attorney who sought to help reform America’s justice system. She practiced civil litigation for a law firm and worked to help prisoners who may have been sentenced unjustly get reduced punishments, free of charge.

“In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie,” her family said in a statement obtained by CNN. “Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined.”

Kryst posted a photo of herself on Instagram before her death, with a caption that said, “May this day bring you rest and peace,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself.

To get help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). There is also a crisis text line. For crisis support in Spanish, call 1-888-628-9454.
