Big changes are happening over at Hot 97, fam. And unfortunately, one of NYC’s most iconic radio voices is saying goodbye.
After almost three decades holding it down, DJ Enuff has officially been let go in a surprise shake-up. Word on the street was that Bronx legend Funkmaster Flex had something to do with it, but Flex shut that down quick.
“TMZ could never twist me up to flip on my guy, I love him to death,” Flex declared during his final 7 p.m. show on Sept. 1, before confirming he’s taking over the 5–10 p.m. slot. That’s our guy!
The way Flex worded his announcement had folks thinking he was leaving Hot 97 altogether. But nah, it was Enuff who ended up being the casualty of this whole situation.
Flex doubled down, setting the record straight:
“I would never have anything to do — not just my brother. I would have nothing to do with anyone being fired. You know why? I’m too hot. Why would I be worried about anybody in here? I don’t influence that. I don’t need to. I like to grind.” Real talk!
Still, he wasn’t shy about pointing fingers elsewhere, hinting that Enuff’s real ops might be closer than he thought:
“The people who snaked you, man, was in that video on your goodbye. The people who snaked you were standing outside when you was with TMZ… you go back to that video and you really look at their faces.” Ouch! Someone’s feeling some type of way!
Apparently, those in the clip included Enuff’s wife and co-workers DJ Drewski, DJ E-Stylez, and DJ Lady S. And get this – Drewski was one of the DJs who benefitted from the shake-up, landing the 11 a.m.–1 p.m. slot.
Despite the drama, Flex gave Enuff his flowers, acknowledging his impact on the culture:
“He is the originator of putting the line at those Spanish clubs around the block… there would be no Spanish hip-hop parties without DJ Enuff.” Respect!
Enuff leaves behind a 27-year legacy at Hot 97, where he helped elevate hip-hop culture and shaped New York’s radio sound. Much respect to a true OG.
