Aaliyah continues to captivate conversations years after her tragic passing in 2001. Recently, Dame Dash opened up about his relationship with the legendary R&B icon, offering fresh perspective on their connection and the romantic interest surrounding her at the time.
During an appearance on The Jason Lee Show, Dash reflected on Aaliyah’s magnetic presence and how multiple suitors were vying for her attention. He painted a picture of a woman who was thoughtful about her interactions—someone who’d share an evening with you but kept her romantic choices intentional. Aaliyah was just 22 when she died in that tragic plane crash, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy.
“Aaliyah was like, she’ll go to dinner with you, but she just wasn’t going to fuck, but she’ll let everybody get their shot,” Dash shared candidly. “So a lot of people were really in love with her.”
According to Dash, everything shifted at Diddy’s all-white party on July 4, 2000. That event became the turning point where he and Jay-Z were both making their moves. “So me and Jay, we’re both throwing in our bid,” Dash explained. “Until someone scores, it’s on. […] I didn’t know I was going to fall in love. I just wanted to smash.”
Dash also claimed that Jay-Z strategically positioned himself near Aaliyah in party photos to create the appearance of something more happening between them—a move Dash saw through at the time.
Dash and Aaliyah’s relationship lasted from 2000 until her death in 2001. After that chapter closed, Dash went on to marry fashion designer Rachel Roy in 2005, though they divorced in 2009. He shares two daughters, Ava and Tallulah, with Roy. Dash has also built a blended family with children from various relationships, including son Lucky with Cindy Morales, son Boogie with Linda Williams, and son Dusko with his later wife, Raquel Horn, whom he married in 2020.
