A major development has emerged in the death of reality TV personality Kash, who was shot in Oakland on Sunday morning. Her sister, 38-year-old Vernika Dunbar, now faces an involuntary manslaughter charge filed by the Alameda County District Attorney. According to authorities, Dunbar fired the fatal shot during what escalated into a violent altercation.
The Oakland Police Department’s account describes a chaotic scene. Dunbar initially intervened to protect her sister by attempting to pistol-whip a woman who was fighting with Kash. In the chaos that followed, Dunbar’s weapon discharged, striking her own sister. Kash was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Kash had built a following through appearances on reality television, including roles on “Real West Coast Baddies,” “Room H8z,” and “Young & Reckless.” The night before her death, she’d posted to Instagram documenting what appeared to be a normal evening out with friends.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting underscore how quickly a confrontation can turn tragic, particularly when weapons are involved. The involuntary manslaughter charge suggests prosecutors believe Dunbar’s actions, while not premeditated, were reckless enough to warrant criminal liability.
Dunbar remains in custody pending trial. The case has renewed conversations about conflict de-escalation and the dangers of armed intervention, even when someone’s intentions are to protect a loved one.
