Kawhi Leonard Trade Investigation Delays Toronto Raptors Deal

We broke the news about Kawhi Leonard headed back to Toronto but we got some more news.

The blockbuster trade sending Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors is on hold, and the reason is bigger than a paperwork delay. The NBA’s ongoing investigation into whether the Clippers illegally funneled money to Leonard through a $28 million endorsement deal with now-bankrupt green banking company Aspiration has frozen the trade in place until the league reaches a conclusion.

The Raptors agreed to terms with LA on June 30, sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, two second-rounders and pick swaps in exchange for the two-time Finals MVP. But three days after the moratorium lifted, nothing is official. On Thursday, both teams broke their silence.

“The NBA league office informed us that as a result of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi,” the Raptors said in a statement. “In light of this, we will wait until the league’s investigation is complete.”

In plain terms: if the trade goes through and the NBA later voids Leonard’s contract as punishment, the Raptors eat that loss. They’re not doing it. Not until the league clears the air.

The Clippers issued their own statement, insisting for at least the tenth time that they “did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard” and that they’ve spent the last ten months cooperating with investigators, providing tens of thousands of documents and participating in dozens of interviews. Commissioner Adam Silver said at the NBA Finals last month that the probe needs to wrap up, telling reporters, “We can’t be investigating forever.”

We did warn ya’ll

There’s no official timetable, but Sportsnet reported Thursday that a resolution is expected by next Tuesday’s Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas. And barring a contract voiding, the trade is expected to go through.

Kawhi didn’t wait around looking nervous about it. He was front row at Kyle Lowry‘s retirement press conference in Toronto on July 7, showing love to his old teammate as Lowry signed a one-day contract to retire as a Raptor. The optics were hard to miss. He’s not acting like a man who thinks this falls apart.

Leonard is 35 years old, coming off the highest-scoring season of his career, averaging 27.9 points in 65 games for a Clippers squad that still missed the playoffs. He has one year and $50.3 million left on his contract, and Toronto is already in extension talks with his new agent, Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports. The Raptors haven’t won a playoff series without Kawhi since 2020. The math on why they want him back isn’t complicated.

The investigation centers on Pablo Torre’s reporting that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer was an investor in Aspiration, and that Leonard’s endorsement deal required him to do no actual endorsement work. The NBA hired outside counsel Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz to investigate. That was ten months ago.

Toronto is waiting. Kawhi is waiting. The whole league is waiting. Silver just needs to let the lawyers finish their homework.

The Clippers, for their part, have issued statements strongly denying any cap evasion. They state they are cooperating fully with the league, having provided tens of thousands of documents and participating in dozens of interviews over the past ten months. They position themselves as victims of Joe Sanberg rather than co-conspirators in cap manipulation. Yet, the NBA is taking its time, protecting the competitive integrity of its salary structure. The ongoing Kawhi Leonard trade investigation places both franchises in a frustrating holding pattern. Front offices are frozen, unable to make subsequent roster adjustments or sign free agents who are waiting to see how the board settles.

Modern sports deals are no longer just about years and salary figures. They are entangled with tech investments, shadow marketing partnerships, and third-party corporate entities. When these external partners fail, the fallout reaches all the way to the hardwood. Ultimately, the resolution of this Kawhi Leonard trade investigation will dictate whether Toronto gets its championship hero back or if the Clippers are forced to pivot entirely. Until then, both front offices must wait, and the fans are left to ponder what could have been.
