Police recieved calls from Marshawn Kneeland’s girlfriend and the NFL before they discovered his body. They had concerns about his mental health.

The news hit hard on November 6, 2025: Marshawn Kneeland, a Dallas Cowboys defensive end, passed away at just 24 years old. The sports community reeled, especially after Kneeland’s recent touchdown on Monday Night Football. As details emerged, a clearer picture painted a story of mental health struggles. Reports indicate that both the NFL and Kneeland’s girlfriend contacted police before his body was found. The cause of death is believed to be suicide.

Marshawn Kneeland’s final hours involved a police chase

It’s believed that Marshawn Kneeland died by suicide, but events leading up to it began the night before. Sources say Kneeland was pursued by the Texas Department of Public Safety after he didn’t stop for a routine traffic stop around 10:33 pm local time. The reasons for the stop and Kneeland’s destination remain unclear.

After reportedly crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot, police found Kneeland’s body near the abandoned vehicle early November 6. Reuters reported the NFL star died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police were in touch with Kneeland’s girlfriend and the NFL before discovering his body

The attempt to evade police followed a series of events, with reports suggesting Kneeland was dealing with mental health issues before November 5. People reports that police received a call from Catalina Mancera around 11:30 pm on November 5.

Mancera, believed to be Kneeland’s girlfriend, told police that he’d sent “goodbye” texts to family and was armed and struggling. People reports that Mancera tried to contact several people while on the phone with 911 dispatchers, fearing Kneeland would take his life.

Mancera wasn’t alone in trying to help Kneeland. The NFL also contacted local police as they searched for him. A league representative informed the Plano Police Department that Kneeland was experiencing a mental health crisis. Another welfare call was placed before Kneeland’s body was found, though the caller’s identity remains unclear.

The specifics of Kneeland’s mental health concerns before his death remain unclear, as does the nature of the traffic violation. The 24-year-old was in his second year with the Dallas Cowboys and had no prior police record.

Both the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys have released statements regarding Kneeland’s passing.

This is a developing story.
