Nicki Minaj’s Political Shift: Obama and Newsom

In 2025, the one and only Nicki Minaj made a surprising political pivot, fully embracing the MAGA movement. The rap superstar openly expressed her support for former President Donald Trump and spoke at several conservative events. This marked a stark contrast from her previous criticisms of Trump, as the Queens native found herself disillusioned with the Democratic Party.

Nicki Minaj Explains Her MAGA Embrace

According to Minaj, her frustration with the Democratic establishment began with former President Barack Obama. She didn’t appreciate the expectation for Black celebrities to automatically support him, nor his close friendship with rap mogul Jay-Z, with whom Minaj has long feuded. “I think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not,” she told Time. “Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.” Minaj’s evolving political views reflect deeper, often complex cultural currents within the hip-hop community.

Minaj’s disillusionment deepened when Obama campaigned for Kamala Harris in 2024, wondering aloud if Black male voters would be uncomfortable voting for a woman. “I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn’t like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave,” Minaj recalled. “They felt like they weren’t being listened to.”

The rapper also took issue with California Governor Gavin Newsom, claiming he ignored her pleas for help after her home was repeatedly targeted by anonymous police calls in 2022 and 2023. “He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,” she said, a experience that shaped her views on political loyalty and support.

In 2025, Republican congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna reached out to Minaj about the “swatting” incidents, an interaction that Minaj said made her feel ready to publicly embrace conservatism.

Nicki Minaj’s Shift From Trump Critic to Supporter

It’s worth noting that Minaj was once a vocal critic of Donald Trump, particularly his immigration policies, speaking from the perspective of someone whose ancestral roots and personal freedom struggle shaped her early understanding of America. “What stuck with me was the children being taken away from their parents when they came into this country,” she told Rolling Stone. “That really bothered me because I was one of those immigrant children coming to America to flee poverty.” However, her views have clearly evolved, with the rapper now standing firmly alongside the former president.

While Minaj may have enjoyed watching Trump on The Apprentice, her political transformation represents a complex personal journey, one that illuminates the nuanced perspectives within the Black community on issues of identity, loyalty, and the role of celebrity in the public discourse.
