SMH: Federal Agents Shoot 2 People In Portland

Alright, y’all, another week, another story of federal agents involved in a shooting. This time, the drama unfolded in Oregon.

Last Thursday afternoon in Portland, things got tense when federal immigration officers opened fire during a confrontation. Two people were wounded, and honestly, the city was already on edge. This incident happened just a day after a deadly ICE-involved shooting rocked Minnesota. It’s a lot to process.

The Portland Police Bureau got the call around 2:18 p.m. about a shooting outside Adventist Health hospital. Shortly after, another call came in from a nearby neighborhood: a man, shot and in need of help, was reaching out to residents. Officers quickly located both a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. They confirmed these injuries were from the earlier clash with federal agents. One victim even received a tourniquet from the police. Details on their conditions are still scarce.

By the time night fell, the city was in an uproar. Hundreds of folks gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building, demanding answers and transparency. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield wasted no time, announcing his office would investigate if any federal officer stepped outside their lawful authority, ready to refer charges if needed.

Now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came with their own side of the story. They claimed the passenger in the vehicle was “a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring,” and linked to a recent shooting right there in Portland. DHS said their agents approached the car for a “targeted vehicle stop,” but things allegedly went sideways when the driver tried to hit them with the car.

“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot,” DHS stated. “The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene.” That’s their narrative, but let’s be real: it hasn’t been independently confirmed, and there’s no evidence backing up those gang ties. Civil rights advocates are quick to point out that in previous ICE-involved shootings during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdowns, video footage often raised serious questions about the official accounts. Think about the fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis just the day before.

Later that Thursday, around 7:59 p.m., Attorney General Rayfield formally announced the state investigation. This move clearly signals Oregon’s increasing pushback against federal enforcement actions it sees as overly aggressive and unchecked. Rayfield emphasized, “We have been clear about our concerns with excessive use of force by federal agents in Portland and nationally. We have also been clear about our intent to investigate circumstances involving federal agents to ensure they are accountable to acting within the scope of their official duties. Today’s incident only heightens the need for transparency and accountability. Our office will take every step necessary to ensure that the rights and security of Oregonians are protected.”

With two ICE-related shootings happening back-to-back, Portland’s incident isn’t just a local issue. It’s now part of a bigger national conversation. Protests are spreading, and eyes are on how and when federal immigration agents decide to use deadly force. Our communities deserve to know the full truth.
