Black people fought too hard for the right to vote to sit on the sidelines when it comes to running elections. Now, ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, the effort to recruit more Black poll workers is a critical part of ensuring our communities have a hand in the democratic process.

Howard University's 2026 Homecoming proved that when the Bison come home, Washington, D.C., becomes the center of Black culture, fashion and celebration. Held October 11-18 under the theme "Wildest Dreams," this year's festivities brought students, alumni and visitors together for a week rooted in legacy, school pride and unforgettable experiences.

R&B singer Freddie Jackson passed away on Oct. 5. Known for romantic ballads like "You Are My Lady" and "Rock Me Tonight," his smooth hits have been in constant rotation on quiet storm playlists since the mid-1980s. Although his official cause of death has not been confirmed, Jackson was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2004. Jackson was 70 years old.

The annual celebration of creativity, community, and entrepreneurship brought out faces like Olandria Carthen, Michael B. Jordan, Aaron Pierre, Mahershala Ali, John Legend, and plenty more who dropped gems on everything from career evolution and personal growth to upcoming projects and so much more.

From actors to athletes, to politicians and more, we're honoring the Black legends we lost in 2026. Sister Betsy Jean Farrakhan, the eldest daughter of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and the late Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, has died, according to the Nation of Islam. She was known for decades of service to the Nation of Islam, particularly through agriculture and youth education. In 2016, she received the organization's first Farmer of the Year honor for her farming work in Michigan and efforts to encourage young people to pursue agriculture, Final Call News reported. She also held leadership roles in Muslim Girls Training. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. She was 72 years old.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards celebrated the best on television with stunning fashion on the blue carpet. From Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe's power couple style to Zendaya's bejeweled gown and pixie cut, the night showcased incredible Black talent. Ayo Edebiri wore a soft blue front with bold red back, while Colman Domingo took risks with a Nehru jacket and purple sash. Sheryl Lee Ralph stunned in a strapless column gown, and Niecy Nash-Betts commanded attention in a bold red mermaid dress. Quinta Brunson wore a gold slip dress, and Tyler James Williams looked sharp in grey and black. LL Cool J stopped traffic in all black, while Tiffany Haddish impressed in a green floor-length gown with a chic bob. Other highlights included Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's grey tuxedo jacket, Chase Infiniti's beaded mermaid gown, and Adrian Dev's embellished jacket bringing major bling to the evening.
