Washington, D.C. was long ago dubbed Chocolate City in recognition of its significance as a place where Black residents built communities, elected leaders and created a cultural legacy that has shaped America for decades. But under President Donald Trump's second term, a new wave of battles over who controls the capital continues to rock residents and visitors alike. D.C. has long struggled with its lack of statehood, which many fear has opened the floodgates for the federal government to meddle in local affairs.

When Black Washingtonians gained political power in 1867, Congress abolished the city's elected government and handed control to three presidential appointees. Direct federal rule lasted a century.

The Smithsonian Institution offers over 21 museums, many located in the nation's capital, and most are free. Collections include the National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Postal Museum, and Anacostia Community Museum. The National Museum of African Art features exhibits exploring art through diverse lenses, while the National Air and Space Museum celebrates human flight achievements and stories of pioneering Black aviators. The National Portrait Gallery holds over 26,000 portraits including presidents and civil rights icons. Visitors can explore contemporary art at the Hirshhorn Museum, entertainment history at the American History Museum, and natural wonders at the Natural History Museum featuring the Hope Diamond.
