It’s been over five years since Pop powerhouse JoJo first revealed interest in portraying Ivory Queen of Soul Teena Marie in a biographical film, but – if a recent announcement by the late diva’s daughter Alia Rose is anything to judge by – the chance for Jo to do so may be coming soon.
During a recent visit to SIRIUSXM’s ‘Clay Cane Show,’ Alia Rose shared personal memories of her legendary mother, reflected on the late diva’s impact on music, and even revealed intent to bring her life story to the screen.
“There’s a book coming out about her life and I’m working on a film as well. I haven’t really talked about it too much, but it’s finally happening. I’m so excited about it because I feel like her story needs to be told,” Alia Rose relayed. And we’re excited too!
Marie passed away in 2010 at the age of 54, leaving a void in the world of soul. Her music continues to inspire generations.
And though this isn’t the first time news of a Teena biopic has hit the Web, Rose made clear she’s been intentional about not rushing the final product to ensure it’s done right. As it should be! We need to make sure her legacy is honored properly.
“I took my time with it. There were a couple of times [in the past] that it could’ve happened like six or seven years ago, but I was like [no] and I shelved it,” she told Cane. “Now, I’m working with a writer that I really love and I worked with myself on a bunch of film projects. So, [the film] is coming together.”
And though Marie’s daughter confirmed she has no interest in playing her mom on screen herself, she also said the person who will portray the R&B diva has not been cast yet. Any suggestions, BlkCosmo fam?
At writing, no tentative premiere date or network for the movie has been announced. Stay tuned for updates as they unfold. We’ll be watching!
