Andrew Gillum was once one of the Democratic Party’s most promising young leaders, coming within a fraction of becoming Florida’s first Black governor. Now, a series of legal troubles, including his latest arrest, has completely overshadowed the former Tallahassee mayor’s political legacy.
Gillum, 46, was arrested last week in Daphne, Alabama, after police said they found methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, according to BlkCosmo. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana and was released from jail the following day. This arrest marks the latest chapter in what has become a dramatic fall from grace for a politician who once energized Democratic voters across the nation.
The former gubernatorial candidate’s troubles began shortly after his narrow 2018 loss to Republican Ron DeSantis. Andrew Gillum entered politics early, winning a Tallahassee City Commission seat at 23 before becoming mayor in 2014. Four years later, he emerged as a national Democratic star after upsetting better-funded opponents to win the party’s nomination for governor, according to NPR.
His campaign tapped into something real. Progressive voters and Black Floridians saw in him the possibility of historic representation. A victory would have made him Florida’s first Black governor. He had endorsements from former President Barack Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders. Still, he lost to DeSantis by less than 33,000 votes in what became one of the state’s closest gubernatorial races on record.
Less than two years after that loss, the narrative shifted. In 2020, Gillum was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room where another man had suffered an apparent drug overdose, according to POLITICO. Police recovered suspected methamphetamine from the room, but Gillum was not charged.
He acknowledged the moment with vulnerability. “This has been a wake-up call for me,” he said in a written statement. “Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse. I witnessed my father suffer from alcoholism and I know the damaging effects it can have when untreated. I also know that alcoholism is often a symptom of deeper struggles.”
Gillum entered rehabilitation for alcohol abuse and depression following the incident.
But his legal troubles intensified in 2022 when federal prosecutors indicted him on charges including wire fraud, conspiracy and making false statements to the FBI, according to the Department of Justice. Prosecutors alleged he accepted undisclosed gifts from undercover FBI agents posing as developers while serving as Tallahassee’s mayor.
A federal jury acquitted him of making false statements to the FBI the following year but couldn’t reach a verdict on the remaining fraud charges. Prosecutors later dismissed those counts entirely.
Gillum remained involved in political commentary through the NAACP Image Award-winning podcast “Native Land Pod,” but never returned to elected office. He was released from custody following his most recent arrest.
