The legal battle over Chadwick Boseman‘s estate just got messier. New court documents and email exchanges reveal tensions that go back further than anyone realized, and the implications for his widow, Simone Ledward, continue to mount as his brothers push to remove her as administrator of his multi-million dollar estate.
The core issue remains unchanged: Chadwick Boseman‘s brothers allege that Ledward has failed to distribute roughly $3 million in assets earmarked for his parents under a 2022 court order. When the “Black Panther” actor died in August 2020 without a will, the courts determined his parents should receive 50% of his estate, with Ledward getting the other half. Six years later, the brothers claim that money never reached their parents’ hands.
Ledward’s legal team is fighting back hard. In newly obtained court filings reviewed by Page Six, her attorney Adam Streisand argues that she’s not only complied with the court order but exceeded it through her own generosity. He characterized the brothers’ petition as a calculated “public relations stunt to smear [her] in the tabloid press.”
“Simone has not only complied with the Order, but as a product solely of her own extraordinary generosity, she has gone well beyond what was required of her,” Streisand wrote. He emphasized that her support has been both financial and collaborative, adding that she’s consistently worked to include the Boseman family in efforts to preserve and celebrate Chadwick’s memory.
But Streisand also acknowledged the real damage being done. Despite Ledward’s efforts, he said, the family has responded by filing a petition “replete with falsehoods” designed to discredit her and harm Chadwick’s legacy in the process.
What really complicates things are email exchanges obtained by BlkCosmo. Messages from November and December 2020 show Boseman’s family’s legal team demanding that Ledward “execute a release for Chad’s medical records” and “digitally image his cell phones, computers, iPads, and other electronics” along with his bank accounts. They framed it as necessary to “fulfill Chad’s actual intent and ensure that the distribution of assets aligns with the free will that God gave him.”
The demands didn’t sit well with Ledward’s team. Her response indicated the request had disappointed her and would require “an entirely different posture” going forward. She pointed out that she’d actively tried to include Boseman’s brothers in all legacy projects honoring him. Now, she signaled, her approach would shift to protect both her decisions and her late husband’s memory from being tarnished.
Things escalated in August 2021 when the brothers escalated their concerns dramatically. In another email, they raised questions about the circumstances of Chadwick’s death itself, requesting his medical records and demanding explanations for why he was found on his bedroom floor. They claimed the autopsy had revealed “startling results” and expressed concerns about his medical treatment, specifically citing the amount of hydromorphone found in his system.
The brothers also claimed Chadwick had made recordings documenting his wishes to split 90% of his film residuals between his parents and brothers. Ledward’s attorney rejected the entire line of questioning, pointing out the family had been silent for nine months before sending this “disturbing letter” just days before the anniversary of Chadwick’s death. The timing, the attorney argued, showed a painful lack of sensitivity toward a widow still processing her grief.
What started as an estate distribution dispute has become something far more complicated: questions about how Ledward has managed Boseman’s legacy, tensions over his final days, and competing narratives about what he would have wanted. With each new email exchange that surfaces, the gap between the two sides seems only to widen.
