Britney Spears found herself in some legal hot water down in Southern California this week. Authorities confirmed the pop icon was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The 44-year-old singer was taken into custody Wednesday night in Ventura County after California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically along the southbound lanes of the 101 freeway. According to officials, the call came in shortly before 9 p.m. Britney Spears was the only person inside the ride, and things got messy pretty quick.

Police located a black BMW 430i believed to be involved and pulled it over near Westlake Boulevard. During the traffic stop, officers said Spears showed signs of impairment and was asked to complete field sobriety tests. She was ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI involving a mix of drugs and alcohol.

Her car got towed from the scene, and she was released from custody the following day, according to Ventura County jail records. Chemical tests are still pending as the investigation continues.

In a statement shared with NBC News, a rep for Spears addressed the situation: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law.”

The rep also mentioned that Spears’ family plans to spend time supporting her in the coming days.
