Voletta Wallace, the mother of rap icon The Notorious B.I.G., was laid to rest on Wednesday at the Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, the same funeral home where her son was memorialized over 28 years ago. The ceremony drew dozens of mourners, including Biggie’s widow Faith Evans, fellow hip-hop stars Lil Kim, Mase, and Diddy’s son Christian Combs, as well as Voletta’s grandchildren T’yanna and CJ.
Among those paying their respects was Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, along with Voletta’s great-granddaughter. The loss of Voletta, who passed away on February 21 at the age of 78 in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, marked the end of an era for the hip-hop community.
After the tragic death of her son in 1997, Voletta Wallace became a prominent public figure, using her platform to speak out on issues related to her son’s legacy and the culture of hip-hop. She also took on the responsibility of managing Biggie’s multimillion-dollar estate, solidifying her role as a matriarch within the industry.
Voletta Wallace will be remembered as not only a devoted mother but also a powerful figure in the world of hip-hop. Rest in peace.
