The NAACP is stepping into the fight for answers surrounding Nolan Wells‘ death, joining his family’s legal team as questions remain about what happened to the young Black man. The organization’s Office of General Counsel announced Monday that it will work alongside Wells’ legal team, which includes civil rights attorney Ben Crump and civil rights icon Rev. Al Sharpton, to pursue a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We’re taking up this fight to search for truth and transparency surrounding the death of Nolan Wells,” Kristen Clarke, general counsel of the NAACP, wrote in a statement. Clarke previously served as the U.S. Department of Justice’s assistant attorney general for civil rights. The organization said its role will include bringing additional investigative resources to the case, pressing relevant authorities for transparency and supporting efforts to ensure Wells’ family receives the answers they’ve been asking for.
The NAACP has a long history of pushing for transparent investigations whenever a Black life is lost under suspicious circumstances. For more than a century, the organization has pressed law enforcement and government officials to take those cases seriously, conduct thorough investigations and ensure that families aren’t left wondering what happened to their loved ones.
“We will help bring additional investigative resources to bear and work to ensure that no stone is left unturned in seeking answers and accountability for Nolan’s family,” Clarke continued.
The announcement comes after Wells’ family’s independent autopsy was presented last month at the NAACP’s 117th National Convention in Chicago. Wells’ parents, the NAACP and attorney Crump revealed the findings, which showed Wells’ manner of death remained undetermined. That finding, coupled with other pressing questions connected to his final moments on Horn Island, Mississippi, has added urgency to calls for a thorough investigation.
“The world is watching, and Nolan Wells’s family deserves a thorough accounting of what happened,” NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said. “Too often, the deaths of young Black people are dismissed, downplayed, or inadequately investigated unless we demand answers.”
For Wells’ family, having the NAACP join the case means more legal and investigative support as they continue searching for answers after the teen’s suspicious disappearance and death around the Fourth of July. The organization said its Office of General Counsel will pursue every avenue available to uncover the truth while pushing authorities for transparency and accountability.
For now, the biggest question remains: What happened to Nolan Wells? His family, now with the NAACP and its legal team alongside them, is continuing to demand answers.
