Sheryl Underwood Responds to Tony Hinchcliffe’s Joke

Sheryl Underwood is trending online following The Roast of Kevin Hart, after jokes about her late husband sparked serious backlash from viewers and the culture at large.

During the live Netflix event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a reference to the death of Underwood’s husband, Michael Sparkman, who died by suicide in 1990 after battling depression. The moment hit different for many watching—touching on real pain and loss in a way that felt heavy, even for a roast. You know how sometimes a joke just doesn’t land the way it’s supposed to? Yeah, this was one of those times. A search for Sheryl Underwood quickly filled with reactions and think pieces about where the line should be drawn.

“Her husband committed suicide three years into the marriage,” Hinchcliffe said during his set. “I’ve been sitting next to her for two hours, and I have to ask: how did he last that long?”

Though Underwood appeared to laugh in the moment—maybe to keep things moving—viewers quickly reacted online, calling out the joke for crossing boundaries that should probably stay uncrossed. The discourse was real, touching on everything from comedy ethics to how we handle queer identity and radical women of color in spaces that don’t always protect them.

After the event, she addressed the controversy during an interview with TMZ.

“Freedom of speech is alive and well at Netflix,” Underwood said, her response sharp and measured.

Underwood later responded from the stage with a roast of her own, proving she wasn’t about to let anyone have the last word.

“Question for the day is, who has had more Black d–k in this town? Me or Chelsea Handler?” she joked. “The answer is Tony Hinchcliffe.”

Her comeback was everything—witty, layered, and delivered with the kind of spoken word precision that only someone who knows how to command a room can pull off. It was a moment of reclaiming power in real time.

Elsewhere during the show, host Shane Gillis also referenced Sparkman while roasting Underwood, continuing the theme that had already made things uncomfortable.
