Stephen A. Smith went off on comedian D.L. Hughley during a heated SiriusXM rant, defending his controversial White House visit with President Donald Trump. The ESPN personality didn’t hold back, questioning what Hughley has actually done for the Black community beyond “popping s–t.”
“Excuse my language. F–k it, I’mma say his name. DL Hughley,” Smith declared on air. He continued with sharp criticism: “You’re supposed to be a comedian making people laugh, looking like you got horns coming out of your damn head. What you doing for America? What you doing for the black community other than popping s–t?”
Smith explained his reasoning for the Trump meeting, saying he wanted to discuss real issues affecting Black excellence—specifically Black unemployment, funding for historically Black colleges and universities, and diversity initiatives. He made it clear that having a conversation with the president didn’t mean he was endorsing every policy.
“There’s a difference between selling out and looking out,” Smith emphasized, drawing a sharp distinction that resonated with his audience.
The commentator wasn’t done yet. He mocked Hughley’s career trajectory and access to powerful circles, taking shots at the comedian’s sitcom days. “Oh, I forgot your a– ain’t can’t get to the White House. Been a long time since the Hughley’s, huh?” Smith quipped, suggesting that Hughley’s criticism came from a place of limited influence rather than genuine concern.
Smith’s defense of his diplomatic approach reflects broader conversations about how Black leaders engage with power structures. Whether you agree with his methods or not, he’s making the case that dialogue doesn’t equal compromise—a nuanced take that deserves consideration in today’s polarized climate.
