The legacy of Frederick Douglass is well-known, but today we honor the woman who stood beside him, supported him, and helped him become the icon he was: [Anna Murray Douglass]. On August 4, 1882, Anna passed away after 44 years of marriage to Frederick, leaving behind a powerful legacy of her own.

Anna’s contributions to Frederick’s life and work are immeasurable. She was an abolitionist in her own right and a member of the Underground Railroad. When Frederick, then enslaved, yearned for freedom, it was Anna who provided the means. Using her own savings, she financed his escape, and even sewed him a sailor’s disguise. Frederick successfully made his way to New York City, where Anna later joined him, and they were married in 1838 in the home of abolitionist David Ruggles. Before their meeting, Anna and Frederick each had to overcome the trauma of families torn apart by slavery.

In the 1830s, Frederick was secretly teaching himself to read and write while enslaved in Baltimore. Meanwhile, Anna was working as a domestic servant in the same city. Her parents had been manumitted, making her the first of her siblings to be born free. She moved to Baltimore at 17 to earn a living, demonstrating her resilience and determination. The couple met in Baltimore and hatched a plan for Frederick’s escape to freedom. There is no [Frederick Douglass] without Anna Murray Douglass.

The contributions of Black women often go unnoticed. Anna Murray Douglass played a pivotal role in her husband’s life and the fight for liberation. This reminder encourages reflection on how to protect and uplift Black women today. Anna’s story underscores the crucial roles Black women have historically played, often behind the scenes, in advancing freedom and justice. The story of Anna Murray Douglass remains a powerful reminder to value and recognize the indispensable contributions of Black women to the ongoing struggle for equity.
