Ne-Yo Reveals Rules of His Polyamorous Relationship

Singer polyamorous relationships are having a major moment in conversations about modern love. Ne-Yo is living his truth openly with three women, and he’s not shy about discussing how he made it work after his divorce. While the arrangement brings him real joy, he’s clear that boundaries matter—a lot.

Ne-Yo said his polyamorous relationships have rules

Ne-Yo is involved with three different women. Each of them is solely with him, though.

“The question I get the most is, are they allowed to date outside of me?” he told Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez. “That’s the question I get all the damn time, and I’m going to answer it right now. No… no, they are not.”

He said that they are the ones who wanted to be exclusive with him.

“I did not demand their exclusivity. They offered it. They came to me and said, ‘I want to be exclusive to you and just you,'” he said. “I said, ‘You understand that your exclusivity to me does not mean my exclusivity to you. You understand this?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘You’re okay with this?’ ‘Yes.’ Okay, cool, since you are offering your exclusivity and I’m taking it, now there’s rules that I need you to follow.”

He said that he understands that his girlfriends might grow frustrated with the situation. In the event that this happens, though, he said that they can either accept his verdict or leave.

“I’d be a fool to feel like I’m the only person that anybody will ever be attracted to, anybody will ever want to see; I know that,” he said. “So should the situation ever come up, nothing is above a conversation. However, in that I’m the head of this household, what I say goes. So if I say no, it’s a no. And you just got to let that be a no, or the door is over there.”

He previously had a fourth girlfriend.

He said the relationship works because of ‘radical honesty’

Ne-Yo lives with his girlfriends and their children, and he said “everybody gets along.”

“I couldn’t wish for a better situation, to be honest,” he said. “We talk about jealousy, we talk about insecurity, we talk about all of these things, but we talk about it together as a unit. That’s the key — radical honesty. It’s similar to the kind of freedom struggle that comes with any unconventional life choice—you have to show up with vulnerability and cultural meditation around what your values actually are.”

Ne-Yo thinks people are judgmental of his polyamorous relationship

While Ne-Yo said that he and his girlfriends are happy with their dynamic, he admits that other people don’t always approve.

“The world is mad at the fact that I’m in a polyamorous relationship,” he said on the Sorry We’re Cyrus podcast. “There are people upset.”

He claimed that he has missed out on career opportunities because of his relationship.

“There’s deals that I missed out on because they’re like, ‘We don’t know if we can get behind the whole polyamorous [thing],'” he said. “It’s almost like you can be a great person. You can show respect and appreciation, but the second you do something that they don’t agree with, canceled, you know what I mean? And that just doesn’t make any sense to me. Black excellence comes in many forms, and so does love.”

He said that because everyone is happy in the relationship, people shouldn’t judge.
