Oprah and Stedman’s 40-Year Relationship

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham have been one of entertainment’s most enduring couples, yet Graham remains decidedly out of the public eye. That changed recently when he surfaced in Chicago, joining Winfrey as she reunited with former colleagues from “The Oprah Winfrey Show” ahead of its 40th anniversary celebration. The rare appearance sparked fresh interest in their decades-long relationship and what keeps them going.

While most celebrity couples either fade or combust, Oprah Winfrey and Graham have built something quieter, more intentional. They met in 1986, got engaged nearly six years later, called off the wedding but kept the relationship, and have remained partners ever since. Their story offers an interesting counterpoint to the typical celebrity romance narrative.

The Chicago Moment

Graham appeared alongside Winfrey at a nostalgic gathering with her former show team, posing for photos while holding a large platter of fried chicken. The image, shared on Instagram by former producer Jill Van Lokeren and on Winfrey’s own page, felt genuinely informal—the kind of moment that rarely surfaces anymore from either of them.

Who Is Stedman Graham?

Graham is an educator, author, businessman, and motivational speaker. He founded S. Graham & Associates and launched Athletes Against Drugs, a nonprofit that has distributed over $1.5 million in scholarships. He’s an Indiana Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductee and authored several books on identity and personal development. His 1997 self-help book “You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan for Success” became a New York Times bestseller.

How They Met

In 1986—the same year “The Oprah Winfrey Show” premiered—Winfrey spotted Graham around town with a girlfriend and barely registered him. She thought he seemed like the type who’d be a “player” given his height and looks. Everything changed when they encountered each other alone at a mutual friend’s home. After learning he was single, Winfrey made her move, asking if he wanted to grab a drink as they were both leaving.

He declined the drink (he doesn’t drink to this day), but the interaction sparked something that would last decades.

The Engagement That Wasn’t

Six years into their relationship, they got engaged in October 1992. Winfrey shared the news with People magazine, describing how Graham proposed when she stepped outside to greet him at her Indiana home. But the fairy tale took an unexpected turn when she called off the wedding while keeping the relationship intact.

In a 2017 Vogue interview, Winfrey explained her reasoning: marriage “requires a different way of being in this world.” She expanded on this in a 2020 letter published in O Magazine, writing that she’d realized she didn’t actually want marriage. “I wanted to be asked. I wanted to know he felt I was worthy of being his missus, but I didn’t want the sacrifices, the compromises, the day-in-day-out commitment required to make a marriage work. My life with the show was my priority, and we both knew it.”

What Oprah Has Said About Him

Winfrey made a deliberate choice years ago to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. “Every time there’s a new photograph, there’s a new story,” she explained in 2018. Still, she’s spoken warmly about Graham whenever given the chance.

She’s praised him for loving and supporting her through different phases of her life, for his self-confidence, and for knowing how to handle being with someone powerful. In a 2008 E! News interview, she said: “I happen to be with a man who has always appreciated the fact that I was considered a powerful person. He’s not trying to crowd in on it, not competing with it. He knows how to hold his own.”

By 2022, she was describing their bond in spiritual terms. She wrote in her magazine that their partnership represented “the recognition that you’re both in the relationship to grow into who you’re meant to be as individuals as well as as a couple.”

Graham’s Perspective

Graham rarely discusses his relationship publicly, but during a 2019 appearance on Ellen, he painted a vivid picture of Winfrey: great cook, incredibly smart, hardworking, with a photographic memory. When asked about the challenge of being with such a high-achieving partner, he addressed the question directly.

“The thing about our relationship is that I want the best for her. I’m dedicated to her happiness. So that’s great for her, and I want her to be the best she can possibly be,” he said. He credited the longevity of their bond to his own self-actualization and clarity about his talents and abilities, which allowed him to fully support her without resentment or competition.

“When you have a good partner that’s able to self-actualize their potential, and you’re able to self-actualize yours, then you know. One and one equals about six,” he reflected.
