Cardi B Reacts to Karmelo Anthony’s 35-Year Prison Sentence

mass incarceration is back in the spotlight after Cardi B spoke out about a Texas teen’s 35-year prison sentence. Karmelo Anthony was convicted of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, and the rapper didn’t hold back on social media.

Cardi took to X with a powerful reaction: “Wow! Just freakin wow! DISGUSTING… This is not justice, this is trying to make an example!!!” She later retweeted several messages supporting Anthony, who was just 17 when the stabbing happened and is now 19. The case raises real questions about mass incarceration and how young people—especially Black youth—navigate the criminal justice system.

Here’s what went down. The stabbing occurred in 2025 at a Texas high school track meet after a dispute escalated. Anthony admitted to the stabbing but claimed self-defense—an argument the jury rejected. Prosecutors painted it differently, with First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye telling jurors: “This case has nothing to do with race. This case has nothing to do with self-defense. This was an unprovoked, unjustified murder. It is senseless.”

Anthony faced a possible maximum of 99 years. The 35-year sentence he received has sparked serious conversation about fairness in our courts. The Collin County NAACP responded with fury, stating they were “enraged” by the outcome and questioning “fairness, representation, and confidence in our justice system.”

One detail that raised eyebrows? The 12-member jury and six alternates included no Black jurors. That’s a problem. When communities don’t see themselves represented in the room making decisions, trust erodes fast. This verdict quickly became a rallying point for those questioning whether young Black defendants get equal protection under the law or whether they’re being made examples of instead.
