The warden at California Correctional Institution is fighting back hard against Tory Lanez‘s $100 million lawsuit, pinning blame for the rapper’s stabbing on Tory himself and the prison guards on duty that day.
In court documents obtained by BlkCosmo, Warden Thomas Valdez flatly denies that his actions caused any harm to the rapper and disputes claims that Tory Lanez‘s constitutional rights were violated during his time at the facility.
Valdez doesn’t dispute that Tory was stabbed by inmate Santino Casio with a makeshift weapon while housed in the same unit. The rapper’s legal team contends the men should never have been placed together given Casio’s documented history of violence, but the warden’s response makes clear that argument isn’t gaining traction with prison leadership.
Tory filed suit against the California Department of Corrections, Valdez by name, and roughly 50 correctional officers employed at the facility, seeking approximately $100 million in damages for what he characterizes as gross negligence and deliberate indifference to inmate safety.
The severity of the attack itself is not in question. Tory was rushed to the hospital after sustaining 14 stab wounds and suffering two collapsed lungs from the assault.
Tory’s complaint centers on staffing and supervision failures, arguing that prison officials were not present where they should have been and that the institution showed systematic indifference to violence among its population. The warden’s legal position is that he bears no legal responsibility for the stabbing, essentially rejecting the core premise of the negligence claim outright.
