Tyla is using her platform to invest in the future of women in music. The two-time Grammy winner has partnered with Epic Records to launch the That Girl Music Scholarship, named after her breakout single from her second album, A*POP. This is the kind of move that reminds us why representation in the music industry matters—especially when artists with reach decide to pull other women up with them.
Ten women pursuing music degrees will each receive $5,000 through this scholarship initiative. Tyla is prioritizing HBCU students across six U.S. tour markets including New York, Washington D.C., Tampa, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles, with an additional four scholarships available for students in her native South Africa. Winners also get concert tickets and a meet-and-greet with the artist herself, which is a beautiful bonus that extends beyond financial support.
If you’re a music student reading this, applications are open through October 30 via the Institute of International Education. You can find all the details and eligibility requirements at iie.org/tyla-thatgirl. This is one of those moments where opportunity is literally being placed in front of us—the kind of support system that generational talent like Tyla is creating for the next wave of women making moves in music.
